Do you think a bottle of wine with the word “organic” on the label is ‘better for you”? Perhaps, but probably not. All wine contains alcohol and when consumed in excess, scientists agree that alcohol is harmful to human health. So then why buy organic? Buy organic because it is better for the planet.
In Canada, a wine can be labelled organic if it is made using certified organic grapes grown without the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides. While this may sound straightforward, it can be quite challenging, especially in a cool, often wet region like Niagara where vineyard pests and diseases are rampant. Organic farming is easier in dry, warm climates like Southern France, various regions in California and Chile, and even parts of BC.
However, for the sake of the planet, it is worth the struggle. When a vineyard is farmed organically, the soil and the surrounding environment are healthier. Some organic wineries go further and incorporate other sustainable practices in their vineyards and winemaking practices. For example, Southbrook Vineyards is also certified biodynamic which means they treat their vineyard as one ecosystem. This includes allowing sheep to roam amongst the vines to further promote biodiversity and healthy soils.
So, choose organic not because it is healthier for you, but because it is healthier for the planet. In the long term, that makes it healthier for everyone.
