Charlotte Dalton 'Love Me, Love You' Semillon 2018
We need to talk about Semillon. Easy-to-grow, high-yielding, early-ripening, vigorous vines—all words used to describe Semillon, but words not often used when talking about fine wine. Semillon’s most noted wines (made with its more famous partner Sauvignon Blanc) are made in regions like Sauternes, Barsac and Bordeaux, so its name never appears on the label. As a single variety wine, we may see the renowned Hunter Valley Semillons on restaurant menus and in specialty stores, but not often enough.
So, what a pleasure to discover a lovely Semillon from Adelaide Hills, 1500km away from Hunter Valley, a region more commonly associated with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. It makes one wonder who is the winemaker with the pluck and skill to take what is all too often considered a rather pedestrian grape outside of Bordeaux and make it shine. Well - it’s Charlotte Dalton Hardy.
Hardy was quoted saying she only makes wines for herself. She and her husband have two young children who are the centre of their lives. Family time is their priority. They describe themselves as happy people who make joyful wines. ‘Love You Love Me’ is the kind of fun wine she loves to make and wants to drink. And so will you.
Aromas of grapefruit, green apple and almonds will draw you in. Flavours of nougat and lemon zest will keep you sipping. Crisp and bright with fresh acidity balanced by texture and depth, this is a wine worth seeking out.
